About Us

Markets have been at the heart of communities for centuries and to this day provide opportunities for people in both urban and rural communities to trade and socialise in public and private spaces. They make a positive contribution to the local economy, support local enterprise, promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles and serve as gathering and meeting places for people of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds and interests.

Our Cottage Markets aim to achieve all of the above with a fresh, vibrant and inclusive approach. They aim to assist communities to develop from the inside out so that each village/town creates a market that reflects the diverse skills and interests of its local people. They work in harmony with other community initiatives towards cohesive community development. They promote community spirit and support the development of grass roots enterprises.

GIY (Grow It Yourself), is a not for profit social enterprise that works with a network of over 150,000 food growers in 6000 community food growing groups and projects across Ireland and the UK to transform the nation’s health and well being, strengthen communities and protect the environment by inspiring and empowering people to grow their own food.

In 2014, our GIY Ladysbridge Local Champion Karen O’Donohoe, developed a weekly community led market, The Cottage Market Ladysbridge, as a means of engaging more members to the group, fundraising for their allotment and a way to sell surplus produce grown by the group. The market became an integral part of the rural village’s regeneration and provides a much needed opportunity for people for all ages and background to gather, socialise and support each other. Other GIY Groups liked the idea and so we set about developing the resources and finding some funding to help them follow suit.

GIY is about making a positive difference in the lives of individuals and their communities and The Cottage Market is our newest initiative to help members of the GIY Community do just that.
