The smiley and happy bunch of ladies in the image above (Karen, Eimear, Louise & Kathleen) are the new GIY Cottage Marketeers! With a project that’s been some time in the pipeline GIY is delighted to have been awarded funding from CEDRA for the purpose of rolling out a pilot project to develop 3 Cottage Markets in Ladysbridge, Co Cork, Headford, Co Galway and Drogheda, Co Louth.

Each Cottage Market will be run by the Local Champions from the GIY groups in each location. They will be supported every step of the way by GIY and given heaps of training as well as all the tables, signage and bunting they will need to get the market up and running. We already know that the people who start GIY groups in their communities are change-makers who are always keen to make a positive contribution to their local community and these local Champions are proof of that. The GIY Cottage Market is a fantastic way to build on the solid and supportive network of people who come together to grow food by providing an outlet for selling any surplus produce from their veg patches, a way to further strengthen their community and also a way to fund their GIYing activities into the future.

We are really excited about this new string to our bow and look forward to being in a position to offer resources and training to any group keen to set up their own Cottage Market. Massive shout out to Louise Morrow and Kathleen McMahon from GIY Headford, Eimear Cullen from GIY Drogheda and of course Karen O’Donohoe from GIY Ladysbridge for stepping up and being the first to take on this challenge.
